What is FFPP?

FFPP refers to Forests For Prosperity Project which is agreed by the World Bank with the combined effort of Government of Nepal for implementing Forest Investment Programme. 


What is the aim of FFPP?

The aim of FFPP is to improve Sustainable Forest Management, to increase the benefits of forests and to reduce the greenhouse gas emission of Madhesh and Lumbini provinces. 


What is the objective of FFPP?

The objective of FFPP are 1) to increase the overall production of forest by short and medium term results, 2) to contribute in developing and improving small and medium forest-based enterprises and 3) to contribute in reducing emissions aimed by program to reduce emission in Terai Arc Landscapes (TAL) areas.  


When did the project FFPP make an agreement with the World Bank?

The Government of Nepal is implementing FFPP since July 16, 2021 for the period of 5 years (2021-2025).


What are the components of the project?

Four components of the project are 1) Policy and Capacity Building Support for New Government Structures and Processes for Sustainable Forest Management, 2) Community-Based Sustainable Forest Management and Smallholder Forest Plantations, 3) Forest Enterprise Improvement and Development and 4) Project Governance, Monitoring and Learning.


What are the working areas for the project FFPP?

The working areas for the project FFPP are in Lumbini and Madhesh provinces. In those provinces, 25 municipalities of each provinces have been implementing this project at local level. 25 municipalities in each province. 


What are the management units for implementing FFPP?

For implementing FFPP, Three levels are formed : at federal level under which Federal Project Management Unit-FPMU, REDD Implementation Center of Ministry of Forests and Environment, at province level under the ministry which is looking after the forestry and environment sector - Provincial Project Management Unit-PPMU in two provinces-Madhesh and Lumbini and at local level 50 municipalities are responsible to oversee the project activities At municipality level, the environment and disaster matter related section is a focal unit to coordinate the project. 


What are the major activities of this project?

There are  various activities of the project that will be implemented at provincial level some of them are: training for professional consultants; support for capacity building of enterprises of forest areas and small and medium forest-based enterprises; awareness, extension, study tours and exhibition about higher technology nursery; loan disbursement to develop and improve small and medium forest-based enterprises; loan disbursement to establish and run nurseries of private sectors and financial institutions.


What is ESCP?

ESCP refers to Environmental and Social Commitment Plan which is the commitment done to completely follow the parameters of Environmental and Social Safeguards of the World Bank while implementing project by the Government of Nepal. This plan is legally in the form of compulsive project documents.


What are the sources of fund for the project FFPP?

The funding source is from the world bank grant and loan under the Strategic Climate Fund. 


What are the instruments for the implementation of FFPP?

There are 4 major and 5 supporting mediums for implementing the project. The major strategic mediums are:

  1. Sustainable Forest management plans
  2. community-based forest management grants
  3. Plantation grants and
  4. loan arrangement for small and medium forest-based enterprise

The supporting mediums are

  1. Project Operational Manual-POM,
  2. Plantation Grant Manual,
  3. CBFM Grant Manual,
  4. Environmental and Social Commitment Plan-ESCP and
  5. Environmental and Social Management Framework-ESMF.
